Introduction
Alchemy is proud to announce its partnership with NI Maths Fest, an exciting education festival celebrating mathematics, creativity and problem-solving, taking place in Derry-Londonderry on 22nd and 23rd January at Foyle Arena. The two-day festival will welcome students, teachers and the wider community to experience maths in a way that is interactive, inclusive and engaging.
This year’s theme, Maths Across Cultures, will take students on a fascinating journey through time, exploring how ancient civilisations, from Egypt and India to Greece and China, shaped the mathematics we use today. By highlighting the global and historical roots of maths, the festival helps students see the subject as a shared human achievement, rich in culture, creativity and innovation.
By challenging the fear and misconceptions often associated with the subject, the festival demonstrates that maths isn’t just about numbers on a page, but a practical and creative skill with real-life applications. Through hands-on activities, interactive workshops and real-world problem-solving, NI Maths Fest aims to spark curiosity, encourage confidence and create positive learning experiences in mathematics for young people across the region.
A key focus of NI Maths Fest is finding ways to teach maths beyond the traditional classroom setting, encouraging students to think differently and creatively. The festival-style format promotes mathematical thinking alongside creativity, collaboration and critical problem-solving skills, allowing students to engage with maths in new, memorable and meaningful ways.
Speaking about the festival, Sumeeta Gupta, Centre Director of Foyle Kumon Study Centre and Director of NI Maths Fest, said:
‘As a not-for-profit event, the festival is dedicated to making maths engaging, accessible, and enjoyable — helping to reduce anxiety around the subject while inspiring confidence and curiosity in learners of all ages.’
