At Alchemy, we place mentorship before management, it's how we foster growth and drive connection, creating a supportive environment where employees can grow and thrive. Today, we highlight the mentorship journey of Cara Sweeney, Mentor, and David Gallagher, Mentee, showcasing the transformative power of this relationship while providing insights into the broader impact of our mentorship culture.
Getting started
Cara recalls the beginning of her mentorship journey: "It was by chance that I started mentoring David. A few Software Testing students joined us for a month-long placement, and I was asked to mentor one of them. That month turned into something much longer, and I’ve been David’s mentor ever since. Watching him grow from a student tester to a skilled Quality Analyst has been incredibly rewarding."
David shares his perspective: "From the start of my placement, I was paired with Cara as my mentor. What began as daily meetings evolved into weekly check-ins after I joined Alchemy full-time. These consistent sessions have been invaluable in helping me grow into my role."
Growth Through Mentorship
For Cara, mentorship has been a transformative two-way experience: "Initially, I worried I didn’t have much to offer, but mentoring David highlighted how far I’d come in my career. It’s a joy to use my teaching background in this role, and it refreshes my technical skills. More importantly, it’s inspiring to see the results of someone’s hard work and dedication over time. Mentoring is one of the most rewarding parts of my job."
David emphasises how mentorship has supported his growth and confidence: "When preparing for promotion panels, Cara played a huge role. She helped me refine my presentations and offered invaluable advice during practice runs. These sessions helped me set achievable goals and feel genuinely accomplished in my work. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to aim higher."

This dedicated time creates a foundation of trust and allows us to track progress effectively."
