Guidewire core modernisation is a path of continuous innovation. Some insurers are moving to Guidewire Cloud, while others are already there, adopting new capabilities and embedding AI further into the flow of work. Modernisation, done well, evolves alongside the platform and leaves the insurer confident in their ability to run it.
In our experience, insurers who see modernisation this way get more from their Guidewire investment because the choices made along the way compound as a continuous innovation path.
We have been delivering Guidewire modernisation programmes for over a decade. Recognised this year as a Major Contender and Star Performer in the Everest Group Guidewire Services PEAK Matrix and Guidewire PartnerConnect Consulting Advantage tier partner, we have worked with insurers at every stage of the modernisation path. This is how we have come to think about the work.
From a system of record to a system of insight
The old default was to treat a core system as a system of record. It holds the policies, the claims, the billing data. It runs the transactions. Modernisation, in that framing, is a lift-and-improve exercise: get to a newer version of the same idea and make sure it doesn’t break.
That is a low ceiling. It is also increasingly out of step with what Guidewire offers.
The platform we are implementing today is closer to a system of insight than a system of record. It runs the transactions, but it also surfaces signals for underwriters, gives pricing teams the ability to test and learn in production, embeds AI assistance in the flow of work, and hosts a partner ecosystem that keeps extending what is possible. The value is in what the platform makes possible for the business.
Guidewire Analytics is where much of this happens: Guidewire Data Studio turns Guidewire InsuranceSuite data into analysis-ready datasets. Guidewire Explore embeds dashboards into the flow of work, and Guidewire Predict deploys predictive models directly into underwriting, pricing, and claims. This is where the difference from a system of record becomes concrete.
This reframing changes what modernisation is for and what "done" looks like.
Alchemy’s Core Modernisation Path in Six Stages
Each stage of core modernisation contributes to whether the platform ends up as a system of record or a system of insight for the business.
- It starts with strategy and technical advisory. Every good modernisation programme is shaped by a small number of early decisions: what to keep, what to retire, what the target state looks like, and how to sequence the work. This stage brings honest, independent advice to those decisions: assessing the current estate, evaluating cloud readiness, and shaping a roadmap the business can commit to. The best advisory work now also frames how insight capabilities will land in the business, alongside how the core will be configured.
- Implementation is when the platform is tailored to the insurer. Whether it is a net-new deployment or a new module going into an existing estate, this is where configuration meets business change. Configuration choices matter more than they used to because they determine what insight the platform can generate later. Business alignment and change management running alongside technical delivery are what determine whether the platform gets used the way it was designed.
- Upgrades and cloud migration is the heavy lift. For insurers still leveraging InsuranceSuite on-premises, a version upgrade or a transition to Guidewire Cloud is one of the most consequential programmes they will run, touching data, integrations, non-functional performance and every downstream system. Getting this right takes planning, migration expertise, and the discipline to handle multi-application moves as a single programme. It is the stage that enables everything that follows on Guidewire Cloud, including the analytics and AI capabilities that turn the platform into a system of insight.
- Application management services keep the platform stable, current, and performant once on the cloud. Each cloud update brings new insight capabilities alongside the feature releases, keeping the Guidewire Cloud “always current” promise real, and keeping insurers confident their platform will not fall behind.
- Client self-sufficiency. Our aim is that clients leave every engagement with more Guidewire capability than they had when we started, including the confidence to use insight tools themselves. We get there through structured knowledge transfer, co-delivery models, training from our Guidewire-accredited trainers, and support in building lasting internal capability, using the same Talent Engine that builds our own delivery expertise and Centre of Excellence.
- Innovation and product adoption is where the path proves its worth. Guidewire keeps releasing new solutions, from Guidewire PricingCenter for pricing teams and Guidewire UnderwritingCenter for agentic underwriting, to Guidewire ProNavigator as an embedded AI assistant, and the continued evolution of Guidewire Jutro Digital Platform, alongside a growing marketplace of partner extensions. The question is no longer "should we upgrade?" but "which capability do we unlock next?" With a partner like Alchemy at the table, insurers can make those choices with confidence.

These six stages are how modernisation works if you treat the platform as a system of insight.
How we work
The path framing shapes how Alchemy structures every engagement. We plan for stage six from the start of stage one, build client self-sufficiency into the delivery model, and treat the modernisation programme as the first chapter of a long-term partnership.
A testament to our credibility is the depth of Guidewire capability we have built. We have more than 600 certifications across every product in the suite, held by consultants developed and scaled through the Alchemy Talent Engine, our structured model for building delivery capability at scale. As the Centre of Excellence for Guidewire delivery within NTT DATA's global insurance practice, that depth is matched by global reach and localised expertise. NTT DATA's global scale, data, and AI capability extend what our team can do for clients in every market. This combines deep insurance domain expertise with the specialised capabilities that come from doing this work at scale.
Core modernisation delivers its greatest business value as a system of insight when approached as a continuous path of innovation, built around the confidence it hands back to the people running it.
