What is the Academy?

The Academy is a 5 week tailor made program to give you the skills and knowledge you need to make the best start in your career with Alchemy. The classroom based training is held at the North West Regional College, Strand Road and we have brought in both local and international tutors to make sure you complete the Academy successfully.

The modules include a range of soft skills, technical skills and London Market knowledge. We’ll also get you started on the first of your professional certifications with tutors who deliver this training to service providers around the world.

While you won’t be an Alchemy employee during the training, we will keep in close contact with you by visiting the college, inviting you to the office to have a look around and if you time it right you may even make it to one of our very exclusive #DonutFridays!

We will be assessing your performance throughout the Academy, this isn’t to keep watch over you, but to make sure you have all the support you need to complete the 5 weeks successfully. During the final week we make our decisions about who will be given a job offer. All 20 recruits in Academy 1 were offered a role of either Technical Analyst or PMO Analyst. This was a massive win for everyone involved and something we are very proud of.

We’re behind you all the way through the Academy journey, we want to see you succeed and join us on a permanent basis. You’ll need to have an open mind, willingness to learn and be ready for some hard work!

What is it like to work at Alchemy?

We also like to organise social events to help everyone get to know each other. We were lucky enough to have a client sponsored night out during the first Academy, graduation celebrations, a private box and hospitality at the Belfast Giants as well as an amazing Christmas party. Not to mention some impromptu Friday after work drinks at our local. We had a lovely pre Christmas Family and Friends evening at the office with mulled wine and mince pies. This was a great opportunity for our Alchemists to show their family and friends where they work, find out more about the company and meet the team.

What is the work like?

Insurance companies globally are spending an unprecedented amount on upgrading and digitising their internal systems and as a result, there is an increasing demand for experienced, certified staff who can configure these systems. Our Analysts work directly with Software Providers and System Integrators in servicing clients in this area.

Our Analysts are required to speak directly with the client, assess their needs, gather their requirements and configure the software as needed. The projects you will work on will last months at a time and you will work in conjunction with team members globally.

The role requires communication, teamwork, attention to detail as well as an in depth knowledge of the software and the client’s requirements.

You will be required to travel frequently, visiting client sites to find out first hand what their needs are and to provide updates on the progress of the project. Academy 1 have already travelled to sites in the UK and Europe. When not travelling, you will work from Alchemy’s offices in the City Factory in Derry.

What do I need to become an Alchemist?

You don’t need any industry experience, but you will need a strong academic result in an IT related discipline (such as a BSc in Computer Science). The minimum level of education required is a HND in an IT related subject.

We also welcome applications from graduates who hold a degree in a Business related discipline combined with technology.

You’ll need a strong technical grounding, we require a knowledge of Java, .Net, C# or C++, as well as an awareness of Object Oriented Design Principles.
Any European language skills will be an advantage.

Beyond your technical ability, you’ll need excellent presentation and communication skills. Knowledge of project management (particularly Agile) is desirable.

We require our Alchemists to be open minded, hard working and the ability to work as part of a team.
